Homework

 Induction homework

I think that media is about all things relating to movies, games, music and the production of these topics, as well as the topics themselves. Media, at college will be about understanding all of these segments, from the development stages through to the distribution stage, and everything in-between, ranging not only from the actual genre, such as a movie, but also the equipment used to make the movie, how to edit the movie and bringing it to life.

Topic 1 - Sectors, Products, Platforms and Devices.

Sectors

Media sectors are different parts of media. They are what makes media, media. Sectors consist of moving image, audio, gaming, publishing and websites.

The difference between sectors, platforms and devices are as follows:

Sectors
A sector is a segment of the grand scheme of things. They are one small piece of the puzzle. There are five different sectors in media; moving image, audio, gaming, publishing and websites.

Products
A product is what the media company will produce for their audience to consume. Games, books, movies, or radio programmes are all products.

Platforms
Having products to produce is good, but having a platform for your audience to consume your products is better. Platforms enable the target audience and beyond to consume the product a company has produced with ease.

Devices
A device is what is used in order to consume the product. You may watch a movie or listen to the radio or music on your phone, or play a game on a console of a computer. These are different devices that are used to consume a product.

How has access to digital media technology changed the way in which the audience consumes media?

Digital media technology has changed the way we, as an audience, consume media by giving us super easy access to a tonne of different media products. We no longer need a radio and a television, because we can watch our favourite TV shows or radio stations from our mobile phones. It's become so easy in fact, we can watch movies, play games, keep up to date with the news, and so much more, all from a handheld phone that fits right into your pocket. The use of different devices, as mentioned before, such as having a TV and a radio as different devices is no longer necessary. We can have everything we need on our phones, including games, news, and much more.

Topic 2 - Analogue and Digital

Analogue devices record data linearly from one point to another, and digital devices make calculations using ones and zeros, or the binary system.

5 analogue devices in my home

Topic 3 - Synergy and Technological convergence

Synergy, in the media industry is the collective work of two or more sectors, working in collaboration to achieve a goal, such as an advertisement campaign.

An example of Synergy in the media industry could be the advertisements for the James Bond film, Skyfall. The advertisements for the movie were featured alongside other products, unrelated to the movie, such as Coca Cola. An example of convergence in media can be seen in Skyfall as well, where in a specific scene, you can see a bottle of Heineken in James Bond's hand, which would be product placement.

Topic 4 - Creating meaning

For my creating meaning homework, I will be analysing a clip from the TV show, Mr. Robot. The clip is taken from season 2, episode 11, of the series. The clip can be found here

First, I will be going over the mise en scene. The lighting is dark, like any stereotypical hackers room. Dark, with low light levels, and of course, a light up keyboard. Elliot is dressed in dark, making his appearance more obscure, even though throughout the scene, he is only really a secondary character, watching Mr. Robot decrypt a cipher. The illumination of the faces made by the computer screen, is the only real lighting we see throughout the scene. This connotes that what is happening is very mysterious. It adds mystery to the cipher that is being decrypted, and creates tension as we watch the process of decryption happen. The denotation, is that this is a stereotypical hackers room. The lighting is easy on the eyes, with low light levels, causing less strain for the eyes.

Camera angles
There are a number of different camera angles and movements throughout this short scene. Here are 6 of them:

1:51 - Extreme close up

00:48 - Mid shot

2:35 - Close up

00:07 - Low angle

00:12 - High angle

2:02 - Long shot
